NCEP #inspiredby Project
SMART Academies Trust
I was commissioned by the Newcastle Cultural Education Partnership to work with the 8 primary schools within the SMART Academies Trust. The remit of the two year project was to encourage creative learning through sculpture and I developed a sequence of workshops for staff, students and families to help further embed creativity across the Trust. Each of the student-led projects had a focus upon Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and culminated with a sculptural piece, for permanent display within the schools, which was co-designed and produced by the children. Scroll down to see the outcomes of 8 projects!

Dream Tree
Ninety students from Years 3, 4 and 5 participated over three days to produce all the elements of the sculpture. In the process of doing so, they learned about artists such as Yoko Ono and Dale Chihuly as well as cultural rituals from around the world. The children were keen to use materials such as single use plastics to help keep these from landfill and the oceans. They worked with wire, acetate film and tissue paper, acrylic paints, collage and a lot of plastic bottles. Their tree reflects creativity and dreams and carries wishes and aspirations for greater equality, diversity and inclusion in the world.

Big Dreams
Inspired by dream catchers, 120 students from Years 3 and 4 produced a sequence of weavings and wish tags which were strung together to make a giant mobile. Suspended high above the school hall the mobile reminds the students to dream big!

The Rythm of Our Hearts
A rainbow of colour was used throughout this piece designed and created by 45 students from Years 3 and 4 . The structure of the heart’s sinus rhythm was the inspiration for the pattern of flowing movement across the space. Students made weavings, wish tags, MDF texural hands and a globe with elevated relief.

Follow Your Dreams
60 Year 2 students took part in making this eruption of colour which flows across the balcony wall in the school's main entrance. The elements are held together with ‘golden threads’ and the key words of the school's curriculum drivers take pride of place across the top of the work. Suspended elements took the form of pendant-like structures inspired by Chihuly and referencing the double helix in DNA - the stuf that makes us all humans yet individuals! The ‘wish tags’ contain the personal aspirations of the students regarding the future, their ‘big dreams’.

Message in a Plastic Bottle
This idea built upon the key thematic ideas associated with the Eco School Status held by North Fawdon and thinking around caring for one another and the planet. Using recycling as a key material there was a focus on keeping plastics out of the ocean, making something beautiful from found objects and emphasising an important eco message. Additionally, this work highlight the student ideas of pattern, colour, texture, rainbows, connections strung together and beading from the original consultation. The work was produced by 25 art ambassadors from groups across all year groups and key stages in the school.
