Sunderland Culture Sculpture and Industry Commission
I was commissioned by Sunderland Culture to assist Sunderland Primary schools in developing the use of sculpture within their curriculum provision. The project was timed to coincide with the exhibition of Antony Gormley's Field for the British Isles at the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art.
Students from Years One, Three and Five, across four pilot primaries explored a range of sculptural processes and materials, learned about a range of contemporary and historical sculptors and made works inspired by local industries and the workers within them. Materials were selected for accessibility and sustainability. As a response to Field for the British Isles, each of the projects was designed so that individual elements could be assembled or grouped together to form a larger collaborative piece.
Arising from the project, I produced workshop materials to be used by primary teachers and facilitators at the National Glass Centre and the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens. Primary staff from across the city were also invited to attend an interactive professional development session about the project to further extend the reach of the resources produced.
The project culminated in an exhibition of samples of the student's work at the Gillian Dickinson Learning Studios at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland.
